Is a conviction required to bar a slayer?

Most states prohibit a slay from taking life insurance proceeds from the deceased, even if they are the properly designated beneficiary. The public policy reasons are obvious., in that the law is not going to allow a financial incentive for a killing of the insured. But is a criminal conviction required before a slayer statute or prohibition applies?
